CamperPass Privacy Policy

1. Data controller

The controller of your personal data is CamperPass, reachable at: info@camperpass.it

2. Data we collect

CamperPass collects the following data:

• Registration data: email and username, provided voluntarily when creating an account. If you sign in with Google, Apple or Facebook, the service you choose gives us your email and, if available, your name and profile photo; in that case your username, which is public, is generated from the part of your email before the “@” and you can change it from your profile.
• Profile and account data: if you enter them, profile photo, bio, phone number, vehicle type, starting region and travel zones, interests and, on the “My vehicle” page, licence plate, due dates (road tax, insurance, MOT, tyre change) and vehicle mileage. Your account also stores, among other things, your saved areas, likes, the people you follow, badges, statistics (for example the distance and elevation gain of each navigation) and the status of any Supporter subscription, bought through the App Store or Google Play.
• Location data: GPS coordinates, used to show nearby stopover areas, to calculate routes and guide navigation, and for the route recording feature. This data is collected only with your explicit consent. When you post a question in the community, your exact position is saved with the question and is accessible to other registered users, who see in the app how far from them it was asked.
• Searches: what you search for in the app, including by voice in Android Auto and CarPlay, is sent to our servers and, to find places and addresses, to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service, which receives it while you are still typing; on CarPlay your voice is transcribed by Apple's speech recognition.
• Published content: reviews (with ratings and photos), comments, questions and answers, and routes are visible to other users together with the username of whoever posted them (reviews, comments and routes also to people without an account); the stopover areas you submit, except secret ones, are published on the map. Recorded and manually created routes are published; recorded ones include the full GPS track with times, duration and speed. Your profile (username, photo, bio, vehicle type, Supporter status, badges, statistics, the people you follow and your followers) is visible to other users; your username, photo, bio, Supporter status and the number of your badges, routes, followers and people you follow are also visible to people without an account. Your activities, such as likes on routes and new people you follow, appear in the feed unless you turn off “Public feed” in the Privacy settings.
• Usage and device data: in the Android and iOS app, PostHog collects the screens you open, the features you use and when the app is opened and closed, together with device data (model, operating system, app version, language, time zone, connection) and an identifier of the app installation; after you sign in, this data is linked to your account (user ID and email). PostHog also records app sessions: screen images, at most one per second, that can show everything on the screen, including the text you type, photos and your position on the map. On the www.camperpass.it website, visits are measured with PostHog (which also records browsing sessions, with input fields masked), Google Analytics and Vercel Web Analytics; in the web app (app.camperpass.it) only with Vercel Web Analytics, without cookies. In the app and on the website, PostHog also receives your IP address, from which it can derive your approximate location (city and country).
• Advertising data: ads may be shown in the mobile app through Google AdMob, which receives technical device data, your approximate location (derived from your IP address), your interactions with ads and, when available, your device's advertising identifier, to show and measure ads and prevent fraud. On Android, ads may be personalised; on iOS they are personalised only if you allow it via App Tracking Transparency, otherwise only non-personalised ads are shown. However, the reporting of new sign-ups to Meta described in section 5 applies to every account, regardless of this choice.
• Position shared while navigating (optional): only if you turn on “Show me to other campers” (Profile › Maps), your position while you navigate, rounded to about 100 metres, is shown anonymously to other app users together with your direction of travel and the camper pin you chose (pins reserved for Supporters show an active subscription), without your name or any other profile data. It is never shared during the first and last kilometre of a trip, and you can turn it off at any time. Whatever you choose, while you navigate the app sends our servers your current position and the next stretch of your route (up to about 60 km) to show road reports and campers nearby: this data is not stored.
• Road reports and area status: road reports (for example accidents, hazards, closed roads), the “Still there” / “Not there” votes and your answers on whether an area has space are stored with your account and shown to other users anonymously: they see the type, the location, the direction of travel, how long ago the report was sent or confirmed and how many confirmations it has (for areas: space available or full, and since when), never who sent them.

3. Purposes of processing

• Provide and improve the app's services
• Create and manage your account (sign-in, email confirmation, password recovery, Supporter subscription)
• Show stopover areas, campsites and points of interest on the map
• Calculate routes, guide navigation and search for places and addresses
• Record and display your routes
• Publish your content and show your profile to other users
• Personalise suggestions based on the preferences you set, such as your travel zones
• Show road reports and area status while you navigate and, if you choose so, your position to other campers
• Send push notifications (only if you allow them)
• Analyse use of the app and website, including through session recordings, to improve the user experience
• Show ads in the app and measure the effectiveness of our advertising campaigns
• Prevent fraud and abuse (for example limits on road reports, content hidden after several reports, ad fraud)

4. Legal basis

Processing is based on your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR) and on the performance of the service contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).

5. Data sharing

Data may be shared with:

• Supabase: for authentication and data storage (servers in the EU)
• PostHog: for usage analytics and session recordings, in the app and on the website (servers in the EU)
• Google Analytics: for visit statistics on the www.camperpass.it website
• Vercel: for hosting the service and for cookieless visit statistics (Vercel Web Analytics)
• Google AdMob: for advertising in the mobile app
• Meta (Facebook): to measure the effectiveness of our advertising campaigns: for every new account it receives the email in hashed form, the account identifier, the sign-up date and, for people who sign up with Facebook, their Facebook ID; for visits to the www.camperpass.it/download page it receives the IP address, browser data and any ad click identifier
• RevenueCat: for in-app subscription management
• Firebase (Google): for sending push notifications
• Resend: for sending service emails, such as account confirmation and password recovery
• CARTO, Esri and OpenTopoMap: for the map images; they receive your IP address and the area being viewed, which follows your position while you navigate (Esri and OpenTopoMap only if you choose the Satellite or Outdoor map)
• FOSSGIS e.V. (OSRM): for route calculation; it receives the starting point (usually your current position, also at every recalculation), the destination and the stops
• OpenStreetMap Foundation: for searching places and addresses (Nominatim) and for the map images on the website's area pages; it receives the text searched for and the coordinates of submitted stopover areas and, for the map, your IP address and the area being viewed
• Other external services: some content is loaded directly from third parties, which receive your IP address and technical device data: for example fonts and translation models (Google), area photos hosted on other sites (such as park4night) and free spaces at partner areas (CamperGate)

We do not sell personal data, and we share it for advertising purposes only with Google AdMob and Meta, as described above.

Some of these services are based outside the European Union, in particular in the United States and the United Kingdom, so your data may be transferred there.

6. Data retention

Personal data is kept for as long as necessary to provide the service. You can request deletion of your account at any time: your profile and the rest of your account data are deleted, while your published content (reviews with their photos, comments, questions with their position, answers, published routes with their GPS track), the stopover areas you submitted and your road reports remain, without your username. Data already sent to PostHog, Meta and RevenueCat is not automatically deleted with your account.

The position shared while navigating is deleted when the trip ends; if the app closes earlier, it stops being visible within 25 minutes and is deleted within an hour. Road reports expire after a time that depends on their type (from 1 hour for police to 90 days for height limits, narrow roads and campervan bans), which restarts every time another user confirms them, and are deleted together with their votes a week after they expire. Answers about available space are shown for 6 hours and then deleted.

7. Data security

Communication between the app or website and our servers uses encrypted connections (HTTPS), and account data and content are stored by Supabase on servers in the European Union. Supporter subscription payments go through the App Store or Google Play: CamperPass does not receive your payment card details.

8. Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to:

• Access your personal data

9. Cookies and tracking technologies

CamperPass uses technical cookies necessary for the service to work and analytics cookies to understand how users interact with the website. You can manage cookie preferences from your browser settings.

We reserve the right to update this policy. Changes will be published on this page along with the update date.
